Team reaches National Cup Final
02 Jul 2009
Solihull School U13 team has reached the National Final of the ESCA Cricket Cup. The Final will take place at Oundle School, near Peterborough, on Thursday 9th July 2009 with the match due to commence at 11:00am. Our opponents are Whitgift School from Croydon. This is a truly remarkable achievement by the boys and is the finale of a two year competition. In order to take part in the National Cup all schools had to be their prospective County Champions from the previous year. Thus, the competition is entered by all eligible cricket playing schools in the country. In the second year the competition is then split into four regions – Midlands, North, South and West. Solihull School’s route to the final is as follows:
Round 1 beat Kings School, (Worcestershire)
Round 2 beat St Edwards, Leek (Staffordshire)
Round 3 beat Magdalen College School (Oxfordshire)
Midlands Final beat Leicester Grammar School (Leicestershire)
National Semi Final beat Stockport Grammar School (Cheshire and North Champions)
This is the school’s first appearance in the U13 final although the same team reached the U11 National Hardball Finals in 2007. En route to the final Ollie Haley has hit 121 not out and 135 not out but really it has been a whole team effort with every player contributing at crucial moments. The boys have an abundance of natural talent (7 county and district players), excellent coaching (David Hemp, Glamorgan and Warwickshire and David Smith, K&D) and a terrific work ethic. They practice three times a week at school and play matches every Saturday and midweek also.
All support is more than welcome on the day.
