School Defeats The MCC
02 Jul 2009
The MCC declared on 249 but the time period left for the School to achieve this was slim and the MCC must have been confident of at least a draw. The rules require twenty overs to be played after 5.30 and gradually it became apparent that 249 was achievable, after some spectacular batting. With 18 balls left, Fred Howard hit a six to bring the score level and the winning run came the next ball.
Folk law says it is twenty five years since the School beat the MCC, an annual and valued fixture. Certainly staff with long memories cannot remember such an event. Overall the 1st XI have played 16 matches and won 9 and there are several more to be played in the remaining days of the term.
The 1st XI have just left these shores to take part in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools’ Tournament in Barbados. This is a repeat of the previous successful trip and will involve 2 pre-competition matches as well as ten in the tournament. The tour will last for 26 days and is a great experience playing different schools in an exciting atmosphere and on a variety of grounds.
