Solihull U15s Reach Semi-Final of Daily Mail Cup

02 Mar 2007

Solihull School’s U15 rugby squad are one match away from Twickenham after a thrilling Quarter-Final win against Colston’s School, Bristol. After defeating Prince Henry’s High School, Evesham, (21 – 5) last week, Solihull School received a home tie against Colston’s, who have a tremendous record in The Daily Mail Cup competition.

Solihull started the match strongly and secured a ten point lead with a try from James Trueman followed by a successful conversion and penalty by Jack Matthews -Jolly. Colston’s managed to reduce the deficit just before half time with a flowing move that resulted in an unconverted try. The Solihull pack, ably led by Jack Walden and with open-side flanker Alex Crichton in sparkling form, starved Colston’s of attacking opportunities and pinned the visitors in their own half which resulted in Solihull converting two further penalties.

With the score at 16-5 and time running out it appeared that the home side were coasting to victory. However Colston’s achieved a lifeline with a fine try and conversion which set up a nervous last ten minutes. Every member of the Solihull team played their part in a memorable and well deserved victory. Paul Jackson, master in charge said, “The team spirit is magnificent. The boys have come a long way since September, and to finish the domestic season at Twickenham would be a dream come true”.

The semi final of the U15 Daily Mail Vase competition is to be played at Castlecroft Stadium, Wolverhampton on Sunday 11 March 2007, Kick –off, 11.00 am. Further details, and directions to Castlecroft, are available on the School’s website at www.solihullschool.co.uk. The final is at Twickenham on Wednesday 28 March 2007.
