School brushes up on it's Shakespeare
01 Dec 2007
Solihull School students are preparing to take part in the cut and thrust of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays
The school will be taking advantage of its new fully co-educational status to perform Romeo and Juliet as its first Shakespeare production with an all-school cast. The production has been able to rely on the support of former-pupil Ben Jones, now a student at LAMDA (the London Academy of Drama and Dramatic Art), and a further ex-pupil Peter Byrne, for choreographing the fight scenes.
A total of 48 pupils, including 17 girls, are involved in the production, which runs from Wednesday December 5 to Friday, December 7 in the school’s Bushell Hall.
Upper Sixth Former Jon Wilkes and Lower Sixth Former Indigo Le Fevre from the Lower Sixth will be playing the ‘star-crossed lovers’. The show is being directed by teacher Jean Wilde with assistance from Upper Sixth Former Adam Carver and Gemma Powell, a new member of the English Department. Jean Wilde said: “Everyone in the production has been working extremely hard throughout the eight weeks of rehearsals and audiences can look forward to a great show. We are indebted to Ben and Peter for their choreographic support.” Other roles will be played by George Haynes (Mercutio), John Farrant (Tybalt), Alex Thompson (Benvolio), Adam Massingberd-Mundy (Capulet), Louise Leftewich (Lady Capulet), Laura Mosley (Nurse), Chris Hall (Friar Lawrence), Ben Gershon (Montague), Rachel Webb (Lady Montague), Alex Chadwick (Paris) and Liam Maguire (The Prince). Nicola Reid will play an invented role as the Prince’s Consort.
