Girls salute an exciting future

CCF Girls

04 Oct 2007

Girls as young as 13 are now saluting the opportunity to take part in exciting adventure training as members of Solihull School’s Combined Cadet Force. Ten girls have joined the ranks from Year 9 this year as the youngest ever cadets in the history of the independent school, which went fully co-educational in 2005. They are among 17 female members of the 134-strong army section, having risen through the school after entering the school at 11-plus.

One of only two Midland schools with a co-educational CCF, Solihull School also has two women among its army officer staff and a female commander of its RAF section. The CCF has proved such a success for girls that at least two have gone on to enjoy careers in the army with another set to join the RAF from Oxford University.

Commanding officer Major Nick Leonard said: “Our youngest-ever girl cadets are thoroughly enjoying their adventure training that will help them develop the self-reliance, initiative and leadership skills that universities and employees are seeking.” Formed in 1898, Solihull School’s CCF unit has changed from being an option to a purely voluntary activity.
