Oh What a Lovely War

The Solihull School production of Oh What A Lovely War has supported veterans and serving soldiers by collecting money for the Royal British Legion.
The Upper School satire about the First World War, which features sketches, stories and celebrated songs including Keep The Home Fires Burning, Belgium Put The Kaibosh On The Kaiser and It’s A Long Way to Tipperary, was staged after weeks of intense rehearsal.
The Tony Award-winning play, which was groundbreaking when it was first premiered in London in 1963, featured 21 student cast members from the independent school in Warwick Road. There was also a host of staff and pupils working back stage to ensure smooth running of the show, which ran for three nights.
Producer Lisa Fair, Head of Sixth Form, said: “Everyone worked incredibly hard to ensure the show was top quality.
“The singing and musical arrangement were superb showcases for our talented pupils, while everyone back stage – from make-up and costumes to lighting and set construction – were magnificent.
“The messages in the show are particularly pertinent today, so it seemed appropriate to also have a collection for the Royal British legion.”
The sealed boxes containing the collection money have been sent to the Royal British Legion to be counted, but the school is hoping for a bumper total to add to the £1,500 it raised last month for the armed forces charity from its St Cecilia concert and from poppy sales for Remembrance Day.
