Solihull School has strengthened its links with a school in Chile after hosting the biggest party of students from South America in its history.

The fourth visit by Wessex School in Santiago saw a record-breaking 55 pupils join in lessons and exciting new activities at the independent co-educational school in Warwick Road, Solihull.

New this year was a debate between the schools on subjects including whether Chile should host the next World Cup and all students should learn a foreign language.

There was also a first-ever lesson in which the Spanish speakers were able to give 50 first year students of GCSE-level Spanish one-to-one help with the language.

The visitors also met up with fellow Wessex School pupils Valentina Cabrera and Javi Bretti, who had been assisting in Solihull School’s language department for the past four months.

Other activities included an escorted trip to Stratford to view the Shakespeare attractions followed by football and rounders matches between the two schools.

The Chileans, who were accommodated by parents of pupils, concluded their three-day visit by holding an assembly in which they showed pictures of spectacular northern Chile that will form part of the itinerary for an exchange visit in 2010.

Julie Brown, teacher in charge of the Chile project, said: “Our record number of visitors shows the strength of our links with Wessex School and has further broadened the intellectual and cultural horizons of our Spanish and geography students.”
