RADIO ‘OSCAR’ WINNER PRESENTS PRIZES AT SPEECH DAY
Popular Radio 5 Live presenter Simon Mayo returned to Solihull School to be the guest speaker at the school’s annual Speech Day celebrations.
The winner of the 2008 Sony Broadcaster of the Year award and holder of the 37-hour record for continuous broadcasting (for Comic Relief in 1999) presented prizes to more than 150 past and present pupils at the independent co-educational school where he was educated until 1973.
Simon Mayo joined other guests at the Sixth Form and Middle School prize giving including Solihull Deputy Mayor and Mayoress Gary and Gail Allport and Solihull School Governor Mark Hopton FCA.
Philip Griffiths, Solihull School Headmaster, said: “We were delighted to welcome back Simon, who spoke enthusiastically of how indebted he was to the school for giving him the character-building support and encouragement that set him on the path to national success. His inspirational message encouraging pupils to take advantage of all their opportunities in life is one that I’m sure everyone will remember.”
The audience in the school’s packed Bushell Hall also heard a performance of Andrew Tweed’s ‘Paradise Circus’ by the school’s saxophone quartet of George Haynes, Andrew Turner, Tom Holden and Winston Yap.
Solihull School achieved a 100 per cent pass rate at A level this year, with 82.1 per cent of subjects being passed with an A or B grade.
