Efforts to provide hospice services for life-limited children throughout the Midlands have been given a record-breaking boost by the pupils of Solihull School.

The independent school for boys and girls raised a staggering £14,445 for Acorns Children’s Hospice - the largest single sum from a school in the charity’s history.

Pupils filled 964 bags with goods such as clothing, bric-a-brac and toys worth up to £15 per bag on resale during Solihull School’s charity week.

The bag count equates with the total number of pupils at the school, which moved to full co-education last year for the first time in its 446-year history.

The proceeds will help towards the cost of providing care and support services for children and their families at Acorns’ hospices in Walsall, Selly Oak and Worcester.

Solihull School has enjoyed a four-year association with Acorns Children’s Hospice, having raised more than £6,000 last year by collecting 408 bags of jumble.

Dennis Hyde, Acorns stock and transport manager, said: “This was a tremendous and marvellous effort by everyone at Solihull School.”

Phillip Griffiths, Solihull School headmaster, said: “We are delighted that all our pupils have been so quick to support such a vital cause.”
