In March a team of 8 LVI students represented Solihull School at the West Midlands Regional Forum of the European Youth Parliament. The EYP was founded in Germany in the early 1990s to increase young peoples’ understanding of and involvement in the EU. As such, schools take on the role of a Committee of the EU and debate a number of resolutions during the day. 8 teams took part in the West Midlands and Solihull School, as the Committee on Industry and Research, defended a resolution on energy security. They were selected to represent the West Midlands region at the National Session which took place in Durham on 20-23 September.

In Durham, 14 schools from across the UK came together for three days of team-building, committee work and debating in the General Assembly. The three days of work were intensive but enjoyable, with a ‘E and Y and P’-themed fancy dress party on the Saturday night. On Sunday the jury selected Solihull School, as the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, as the winners of the National Session. They were particularly commended for their enthusiasm for all aspects of Committee and General Assembly work, their development over the weekend and willingness to learn, and the high quality of the debate they created over their resolution on employment discrimination in the EU. The team of 10 students will now go on to represent the UK at the 56th International Session of the EYP in Dublin in November 2007.
