Solihull School to represent UK at Euro Forum
14 Sep 2007
Solihull School is to represent the United Kingdom at Europe’s biggest parliamentary forum for young people after winning a national debating competition. The independent co-educational school beat off competition from 13 other regional UK winners to be selected to join schools from 32 countries at the 56th International Session of the European Youth Parliament in Dublin from November 9-18. The prestigious event, to be opened by Irish President Mary McAleese and to be held at prestigious venues including Trinity College and The Dail, will include working with other nations on a European Union committee and acting as a delegation from the UK. Solihull School’s sixth-formers were selected after representing the West Midlands at the National Forum of the European Youth Parliament in Durham last month. As the EU Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, they were commended on their outstanding skills in debating a resolution on employment discrimination. They were also praised for their enthusiasm for all aspects of Committee and General Assembly work and for their development over the weekend and willingness to learn. Lindsey Hughes, Coach of Solihull School’s Debating Society, said: “This accolade rewards our students’ hard work, excellent debating skills and lively team spirit. They thoroughly deserve what should be the experience of a lifetime.”
The team of ten Solihull School students to represent the UK are James Benge, James Bowser, Lauren Haines, Chris Hall, Caroline Howley, Akshay Khanna, Charlie Krober, Ollie Mayman, Sinead Noonan and Amari Thompson.
