ROYAL HONOUR FOR FORMER SOLIHULL SCHOOL CADET
A former Solihull School student is looking forward to a glittering career in the Army after being presented with a special award by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.
Charlie Mulira, who was born and brought up in Solihull, received the Sword of Honour for being the most outstanding officer cadet on his course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
The honour was bestowed at the Academy’s Sovereign's Parade where the 22-year-old was among 220 cadets on his course to be awarded the Queen's Commission.
Now an officer in The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, Charlie enjoyed his first taste of military life as a member of the Combined Cadet Force at Solihull School, where he was a pupil until 2003, before joining the East Midlands Officer Training Corps.
After graduating in Management Studies from the University of Nottingham, he began the commissioning course at Sandhurst last year and his leadership qualities were quickly recognised.
As well as excelling in course exercises, Charlie ran the Barcelona Marathon with his platoon, raising £5,000 for the Help for Heroes organisation that helps those who have been wounded in Britain’s current conflicts.
He also took part in the endurance competition ‘Tough Guy’ this year and organized his company’s charity ball, which raised £11,000 for Help for Heroes and MacMillan Cancer Support.
Charlie Mulira said: “I was staggered to be told I would be receiving this supreme award and of course thrilled to be presented with a specially inscribed sword by a member of the Royal Family.”
He added: “I am grateful to Solihull School for having nurtured my interest in an army career and for giving me my first step up.”
Charlie’s eldest brother Josh, who also went to Solihull School, is a Captain in the Mercian Regiment.
