Classrooms Come Alive with Sound of Music
21 Mar 2007
Solihull School has come alive with the sound of music – thanks to a local star from the London Palladium production of the world’s best-loved musical.
Margaret Preece took time out from playing Sister Sophia in ‘The Sound of Music’ to rehearse boys and girls from the newly co-educational independent school for their own production of the show from March 13-17.
The accomplished soprano, who is taking over Lesley Garrett’s role as the Mother Abbess in London from April, paid two visits to Solihull School to coach Maria and the other principals, as well as the Von Trapp children.
Margaret’s credits include being the singing voice of Minnie Driver in the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phanton of the Opera’.
Up to 140 singers and backstage crew aged from 7 to 18 will be taking part in the show, along with a 30-strong orchestra. The lead role of Maria will be played by Emma Hubble, the captain by Jack Halsey, and the Mother Abbess by Lucy Pickering.
Lisa Fair, the show’s director, said: “The cast can’t wait for opening night after being inspired by the support of such a big star from the current London production. Margaret Preece’s outstanding skills and experience have proved invaluable.”
The show performed to a packed house over a five night run.
