Organ Recital at Solihull School
Celebrated organist and former Solihull School pupil John Butt, will be returning to the Borough on Thursday 4th September to give a public recital to celebrate completion of the school’s newly restored organ.
John, who gained his FRCO diploma and the ADCM (Archbishop's Diploma in Church Music) while a pupil from 1969 to 1979, will base his programme around pieces that he used to play at Solihull School including Bach's B Minor Prelude and Fugue, Messiaen's L'Ascension and Franck's Second Chorale.
A Fellow of the British Academy who has written numerous books on Bach and 17th Century music, John is currently Gardiner Chair of Music at the University of Glasgow.
Still performing regularly as a solo organist, he has also directed choirs and instrumental groups at Cambridge and UC Berkeley (University of California), appeared with orchestras including St Paul's Chamber Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony, and broadcast regularly for the BBC.
As a conductor, his recording of the 1742 version of Handel's Messiah with the Dunedin Consort won the Classic FM/Gramophone Baroque Vocal Album of the Year award in 2007 and the MIDEM award for Baroque Music this year. His Bach's Matthew Passion with the Consort, being released this month by Linn Records, is the CD of the month in the April 2008 issue of Classic FM Magazine.
John said: “The Solihull School Chapel organ was extremely important to me not only because it was essentially the organ I learned on but also because it gave me my first experiences of accompanying choirs and conducting them.”
The recital will commence at 7.30pm in the School Chapel on Warwick Road. Tickets are complimentary and available from the School reception or on the door on the night.
