Europe Day triumph for Solihull School
23 May 2008
Solihull School students enjoyed all the excitement of BBC Question Time-style debate as they quizzed the region’s MEPs about the role of the European Union on Europe Day.
A panel of politicians from three parties chaired by Sir Bernard Zissman, former Birmingham Lord Mayor and now chairman of the Millennium Point Trust, Advantage Business Angels, Early Equity plc and CDI Group, answered a range of questions in the school’s Bushell Hall.
MEPs Malcolm Harbour (Conservative) and Mike Nattrass (UKIP), along with Phil Bennion (Number 2 on the Liberal Democrat West Midland list for the 2009 election), all accepted invitations to take part in the debate, entitled ‘Why Does Europe Matter?’ after a team of upper sixth formers won a nationwide debating contest to represent the UK at the 56th international session of the European Youth Parliament (EYP) in Dublin last year.
Topics discussed in one of the biggest political forums ever held at the co-educational school included the role of the European Union in Britain, how to involve young people in the EU, Turkey’s membership, and the role of the EU in ending detention at Guantanamo Bay.
