Success for Potential Young Engineers
27 Apr 2007
Alex Chadwick, Robert Draper, Sam Eade and Jon Wilkes, all LVI, having been working throughout the last six months with sponsors National Grid as part of the Engineering Education Scheme. The Scheme aims to provide an insight into career opportunities in the areas of design and engineering.
The team, working with guidance from young National Grid graduates, successfully designed and prototyped a solution to their problem set. National Grid carry out repair work to resolve the problem of gas leaks. They surround the sight with barriers and include beacons on the top of each post to illuminate the hazard. These beacons are regularly stolen. The team designed a brace, to be injection moulded from nylon with glass reinforcement, to resolve the problem. Their prototype is currently being field-tested and if proved to be successful will be introduced at all sites around the country.
