School expands Chilean exchange programme

Solihull School has strengthened Spanish language learning in the borough by expanding its exchange programme with a school in Chile.
Two 18-year-old recent leavers from
Wessex School in Concepción have joined the school as volunteers to assist three days a week on a four-month placement.
Stephanie Aedo and Rayén Pulgar (pictured left to right), who will be going on to university in Chile in February 2009 at the end of their Gap Year, will be helping with Spanish lessons and girls’ football, hockey drama, and music while also aiming to improve their English.
The girls, who are being accommodated by parents of Solihull School pupils, will also be working on Tuesdays at Dorridge Junior School, where they have already launched a junior Spanish club, and on Thursdays at Round Oak Special School in Warwick.
Last year
Vanessa Rios worked one day a week for four months at Solihull School as the first exchange student from Wessex School.
The Chilean school will in turn will be hosting Lower Sixth Former Greg Kirby as an English assistant in June and July, following in the footsteps of Joe Hone, the first Solihull School student to assist in the school’s English department last summer.
Julie Brown, the teacher responsible for the exchange programme, said: “Stephanie and Rayen have a lot of experience of working with children and plenty of interests that will prove useful to pupils and we hope they will find their stay fulfilling.”
She added: “We are delighted by the way that our Gap programme is expanding in terms of both time and numbers after the excellent contribution to school life and learning made by our first exchange student Vanessa Rios last year.”
