The Big Debate - 12 November 2015

Due to the success of last year's event, we once again held the Big Debate at Solihull School. The motion for this year's debate was:

This House Regrets the Government's Pushing of British Values

We were again joined by Old Silhillian and Patron of our Debating Society, Michael Buerk. Proposing and opposing the motion were former pupils, George Diwaker and Katy Hatter (currently the youngest university president of a debating society). They were accompanied by current pupils, Megan Lloyd and Zershaaneh Qureshi.

The format was 'Mace' style, and Mr Buerk chaired the debate, as well as oversaw questions from the floor.

All former pupils, staff and parents, along with current pupils and parents were invited.

A selection of photographs can be viewed here.

The Cooper Opening Ceremony - 12 November 2015

On 12 November our new Sixth Form Centre, the Cooper Building, was officially opened by BBC reporter and Old Silhillian, Michael Buerk. Alongside the official opening, a time capsule was buried, we presented the new sculpture, 'Leap' by Matthew Lane Sanderson, and viewed the granite stones laid in recognition of donors to the Silhillian Fund for Assisted Places.

The supporters of the Silhillian Fund were welcomed back for afternoon tea, a tour and the opportunity to see their stones in the foyer of the new building. Photographs of the day can be found here.

London Dinner - 5 June 2015

On Friday 5 June 60 alumni, staff and former staff attended the Annual London Dinner at the prestigious East India Club. A wonderful time was had by all, as former pupils from a broad range of year groups came together over drinks and a delicious four course dinner. Speeches were made by the Headmaster, David Lloyd; President of the OSA, John Loynton; and London Representative, Phil Pinto. Guests enjoyed a game of Heads and Tails over coffee, with the proceeds supporting the refurbishment of the Mountain Cottage. Thanks to the generous donations, £305 was raised towards bringing the building back to its former glory. Photographs of the event can be found here.

Over 60's Tour - 13 May 2015

On Wednesday 13 May we were delighted to welcome 25 members of the Old Silhillians Over 60's group back to School for tea, cake and a tour. The Senior Deputy Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster took the group on tours of the School, providing them with the opportunity to see how the campus has developed over the last 40 years. Following the tours the guests continued on to the Silhillians Sports Club where they could catch up with old friends over lunch and hear from the Headmaster about the School's plans for the future. Photographs of the day can be found here.

Choral Evensong at St Paul's - 24 February 2015

On Tuesday 24 February the Chamber Choir returned to St Paul's Cathedral to sing Choral Evensong, with music by Walmisley and Purcell. Forty three pupils gave a magnificent performance in front of an audience of parents, former pupils, staff and the general public.

Oliver Walker, Head of Choral Music said: "The Chamber Choir worked incredibly hard under pressure to produce some very moving performances with Purcell's tricky 'Remember not, Lord, our offences' being a highlight for me. It was a beautiful service in the most incredible building - we all feel very lucky!"

This is the third time the choir have been invited to perform at St Paul's and due to the tremendous success of this year's performance, they will be returning again in 2016.

Following Choral Evensong, former pupils and former staff came together for refreshments at Corney and Barrow. Here they were able to meet old friends and make new acquaintances in a warm and welcoming setting.

Please see below for photographs of the event.
