Facilities

The department teaches in a suite of rooms situated principally on the top of K Block, although extensive use is also made of our ICT suite and the other ICT suites the school has to offer. All our classrooms are well equipped with white boards and audio visual facilities.

Curriculum

Lower School

We follow a curriculum based upon the publications “Mira Express 1" and "Mira Express 2", although we make extensive use of supplementary activities and resources in order to further enrich the curriculum.

iGCSE

We follow the EDEXCEL iGCSE Specification. All pupils are entered at Higher Tier.

Sixth Form

We follow the AQA A Level Syllabus.

Co-curricular Activities

Stretch & Challenge

We are constantly working together as a team in order to find ways of stretching and challenging our most able pupils, by observing teaching and learning and sharing best practice, both from within the department and from other departments in the school. We aim to go well beyond the confines of our course materials by making learning interactive and by providing pupils with challenging texts. Moreover, we provide pupils with the opportunity to watch Spanish-language films on a regular basis and also stage a Spanish-language play, courtesy of the Onatti Theatre Company.

Trips & Visits

Third Form (Year 7) pupils can take part in a week of Spanish Immersion near Madrid at Easter – they stay on a camp for one week, engaging in a range of exciting activities. Fourth Form pupils (Year 9) can take part in our Exchange Programme with Colegio Oleza, our partner school in Orihuela (Alicante). Our pupils visit Spain during the October half-term, with their Spanish partners coming to Solihull in the Spring Term (this takes place every two years). GCSE and A Level students can take part in our Exchange Programme with Colegio Mirasur, our partner school in Pinto (Madrid). Our pupils visit Spain during the October half-term, with their Spanish partners coming to Solihull in the Spring Term. This takes place every two years.

We receive visitors from Chile and Argentina on a regular basis, and many Solihull students have visited our partner school in Chile and also taken part in volunteering schemes in Peru, under the auspices of two charities with whom we work, namely Otra Cosa and LAFF.

Destinations

In recent years students have gone on to read Spanish at Leeds, London, Newcastle, Bath, Oxford, Durham, Liverpool and Nottingham, amongst other universities.
