Solihull School

Infant 2

In Infant 2, we continue to build on our pupils’ enthusiasm and enjoyment of learning. English skills of reading and writing are key features in daily lessons. Teachers promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, providing opportunities to develop confidence in oral skills, and to develop their love of literature through promoting a broad variety of reading for enjoyment. Pupils’ progress is monitored through designated spelling, punctuation and grammar lessons and children have the opportunity to apply taught skills during comprehension and creative writing sessions.

In mathematics, children continue to rehearse, practise, develop and apply their knowledge and skills, counting and using the four operations with increasing confidence, complexity and independence. Teachers aim to ensure that children are fluent in being able to reason mathematically and solve problems by applying maths to a variety of practical situations.

The Infant 2 curriculum is taught largely by Form Tutors through topics which connect the children’s learning in English, maths, science, history, geography, art, computing, RS and WPD. Specialist teachers teach PE, swimming, Spanish, music and Forest School across the week. Pupils are expected to follow the structured homework timetable with a combination of simple written and practical tasks set by their teachers to consolidate their learning.

Alongside learning in lessons, we aim to develop children’s confidence and resilience, while cultivating new skills, through an extensive and varied co-curricular programme which includes music, art, sport and drama. Throughout the academic year in Infant 2, in preparation for the transition into the Junior School, we develop our children’s confidence, independence and self-motivation, to equip them for a smooth and exciting move on the next step of their Solihull journey.
