Outline of Careers Advice Available


Thirds [Year 7] & Shells [Year 8]

The School does not see the need for specific careers advice for pupils in these two year groups. However, help and advice if needed is available from the Head of Careers, Rev. Dr. Cluley, whose study is on the ground floor of School House.
In addition:
1. Pupils can access the Careers Information & Literature kept in the School Library.
2. Once a year each form will have a separate PSHE presentation on Careers from Rev. Dr. Cluley.

Fourths [Year 9]

Help and advice is available as follows:
1. Invite to the Careers, Higher Education & Gap Year Convention held every 2 years.
2. Access to the Careers Information & Literature kept in the School Library.
3. Advice on GCSE subject choices, including careers-related information in the GCSE booklet.
4. From the Head of Careers, Rev. Dr. Cluley, whose study is on the ground floor of School House.
5. Once a year each form will have a separate PSHE presentation on Careers from Rev. Dr. Cluley.

Lower Fifth [Year 10]

Help and advice is available as follows:
1. Invite to the Careers, Higher Education & Gap Year Convention held every 2 years.
2. Access to the Careers Information & Literature kept in the School Library.
3. Opportunity to see, without obligation, the Armed Forces representatives when they visit the School – see Rev. Dr. Cluley for more information.
4. From the Head of Careers, Rev. Dr. Cluley, whose study is on the ground floor of School House.
5. An annual PSHE presentation on Careers from Rev. Dr. Cluley.

Upper Fifth [Year 11] Yearly Calendar

The major careers programme begins with this year group and the focus is on helping pupils to select appropriate AS & A Level subjects: the Head of Careers, Form Tutors, Subject Teachers, Heads of Department, Oxbridge adviser, Head of Year, Head of the Sixth Form, Head of the Middle School and the Director of Studies are all involved in this process. More specifically:

Twice a year Option to see [without obligation] representatives of the Armed Forces.
Once very two years Careers, Higher Education & Gap Year Convention held in school.
September Head of Careers gives an outline of the advice and help available during the academic year; explanation of Work Experience.
Opportunity to opt in to the ISCO Futurewise scheme.
November – December Head of Careers explains the post-GCSE options. Individual interviews with the Head of Careers.
January - Head of Careers available to give further advice re post-GCSE options.

Lower Sixth [Year 12] Yearly Calendar

The vast majority of pupils go on to university and so the focus of the advice and guidance given is to help pupils select the right course and university for them. The Head of Careers, Form Tutors, Subject Teachers, Heads of Department, Higher Education Subject Advisers, Oxbridge adviser, Heads of Year, Head of the Sixth Form and the Director of Studies are all involved in this process. More specifically:

Once very two years Careers, Higher Education & Gap Year Convention held in school.
September Head of Careers gives an outline of the advice and help available during the academic year; explanation of Work Experience.
[For those new to the school] Opportunity to opt in to the ISCO Futurewise scheme.
January – March Issue of literature on Post-School Options, Work Experience, Careers Experience courses, Art & Design Foundation courses & Careers in the Armed Forces; plus a presentation on these options & on a Gap Year & the Year in Industry.
March – May Individual interviews with the Head of Careers.
March All pupils complete the Course Finder abilities and interests’ questionnaire, which will result in them receiving a report containing suggested university courses for them to consider.
Lower Sixth parents and pupils meeting re UCAS [university application system].
May & June Talks to all pupils about applications to university.
July Pupils complete a draft UCAS application (which is then given to their Form Tutor).
Visit to a local Higher Education Fair.

Upper Sixth [Year 13] Yearly Calendar

All pupils are issued with further information, including our own in-house strategy form, regarding their UCAS [university] application.

September & October All pupils have an individual interview with the Head of Careers and should complete and submit their UCAS application using Apply.

October – March Universities notify pupils, via UCAS, of their decisions re each application.

October – April Pupils have to reply to the offers they have received via UCAS.

February – April Advice on how to apply for financial assistance for university; pupils complete their online application for finance.

End of April Final date for pupils to receive replies to their university applications, provided they have applied on time.

August Publication of A/S & A Level results.
