Geography
The aim of the course is to:
- stimulate pupil’s interest in their surroundings and in the variety of human and physical conditions on the Earth’s surface
- help pupils to develop an informed concern about the quality of the environment and the future of the human habitat and thereby enhance pupil’s sense of responsibility for the care of the earth and its people.
Pupils acquire and apply knowledge and understanding through geographical enquiry and skills; learning about places; studying patterns and processes; and environmental change and sustainable development. The course is designed to give plenty of practice in literacy, numeracy and thinking skills.
In the Third Forms (Year 7) themes of study include Earthquakes and Volcanoes; The Economic Geography of Japan; Exploring Britain; The Geography of Football, including a visit to a leading football ground.
In the Shells (Year 8) themes include Limestone Scenery, with a visit to the Peak District; Coastal Environments; The Geography of Crime; and Brazil.
Fourth Form (Year 9) pupils study Ice on the land; Development; with particular reference to Ghana and Fair Trade; The Economic Geography of France; and The Global fashion industry.
