Mathematics
Mathematics is a discipline that is fundamental to the study of many other subjects. The techniques learnt here are used directly by scientists, geographers, ecologists, psychologists and many others. The habit of logical thinking is directly transferable from mathematics to many other disciplines. In the workplace mathematicians are much in demand because of their training in reasoning, logical thought, method and order.
In Years 7 - 9 the pupils all follow the same core curriculum of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics, although the more able students are stretched with more complex examples. From Year 8 onwards the students are placed into sets in mathematics. All pupils study GCSE Edexcel higher level mathematics and some also study Additional Maths.
In the Sixth Form many students take a single A level or AS level in Mathematics, but a significant minority undertake A levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. In the Lower Sixth Form Mathematics and Further Mathematics is one option choice so there is no restriction on other AS Level choices by opting for double maths. A number of students go on to university each year to pursue degrees which are directly related to mathematics.
