Music

Head of Department: Mr S J Perrins

The GCSE Music syllabus is designed for those who have an interest in all types of music, from ‘classical’ to ‘popular’. The syllabus consists of four elements: Composing, Performing, Integrated Assignment, and Listening and Appraising. Each component is worth 25% of the total marks.

Composing

The Composing component consists of coursework for which candidates are required to submit one composition based on the theme of ‘ Music for Special Events’.

This component is internally assessed then moderated by AQA.

Performing

The Performing component consists of coursework for which candidates are required to produce one solo and one ensemble performance of their own choice.

This component is internally assessed then moderated by AQA.

Integrated Assignment

Candidates are required to compose one piece based on an AQA set assignment, which will be issued in the Christmas Term of Year 11. The assignment will be based on one of four of the Areas of Study (excluding ‘Music for Special Events’ - see below) and must also be recorded and evaluated by the candidate.

This component is externally assessed as part of the Terminal Examination.

Listening and Appraising Test

This component will consist of a listening and written paper of 1 hour and 15 minutes. It will test candidates’ knowledge of, and responses to music contained in five areas of study: Music for Film; Music for Dance; Music for Special Events; Orchestral Landmarks; The Popular Song since 1960.

This component is externally assessed as part of the Terminal Examination.

For those who enjoy Music and who are competent performers (as a guide Grade IV would be the minimum expected standard by the time the GCSE is taken) this course is much recommended.

The Director of Music is happy to give additional advice to interested pupils and parents.
