Science
Head of Science: Mr A Jones
Biology
Head of Department: Mrs D Wild
The new GCSE Biology course has more emphasis on the maintenance of the human body. There are new topics on Drugs, Exercise, Disease and Diet; these are all in the context of Human Health. There are also modern applications of biological principles such as embryo transplants, cloning, GM foods and stem cell technology.
Chemistry
Head of Department: Dr J Troth
The syllabus has been designed to stimulate pupils and to create and sustain their interest in, and enjoyment of Chemistry. It does this by illustrating the role of the chemist in society, providing a core of factual knowledge and applying this knowledge to give an understanding of the world around us. As much as possible is done through experimental work, where correct and safe laboratory techniques are developed.
Physics
Head of Department: Mr M K Smith
Mobile phones, safer and more efficient cars, buildings capable of surviving earthquakes, medical imaging techniques which help to save lives, equipment to improve the performance of sports men and women, space probes which increase our understanding of the Universe – all of these benefits come from recent developments in Physics. The subject develops logical thinking, and opens up exciting career possibilities.
Unit 1 of the GCSE course explores the efficient use of energy, the generation and use of electricity, uses and hazards of electromagnetic waves and radioactive emissions, theories of the origin of the Universe; this unit is assessed by two multiple choice papers. Units 2 and 3, which are examined by structured papers, consist of a more in-depth study of motion, electricity, radioactivity, forces, light, sound, and the life of stars.
The most able students are entered for the national Physics Challenge during the Upper Fifth.
Notes
- All pupils will be taught by subject specialists and will follow the same course.
- Each Science subject comprises four units, each unit counting for 25% of the GCSE.
- Unit one assessed by two 30 minute externally set objective question tests. One will be taken in year 9 and the second one in year 10.
- Units two and three each separately assessed by a 45 minute structured question paper taken in
year 11.
- Unit four is an externally set but Centre Assessed unit.
- The Centre Assessed unit comprises an Investigative Skills Assignment, which is normal class practical work followed by an externally set but internally assessed written test of 45 minutes. In addition there is a holistic assessment of practical skills.
- Underpinning the Science subjects is the development of the candidates' skills, knowledge and
understanding of how Science works.
