Physical Education lessons provide a balanced programme in the first four years of the school. Boys and girls in the Lower School take part in hockey, athletics and tennis, while the boys can also choose rugby and cricket, and the girls netball and rounders. In later years, the programme broadens to cover anything from watersports, shooting, cross country, badminton and self-defence, to name but a few.
The School has always had a very good reputation in inter-school competition and is proud of the high standard achieved in many sports against other leading schools, and in recent years we have had unprecedented success. The School has achieved some notable successes on the Rugby field during the last decade, including two unbeaten seasons by the first XV, playing against many of the top schools in the country, as well as producing 9 internationals. In recent years the 1st XV have toured Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
Hockey is played to a very high standard, producing many victories in County competitions as well as producing representative players from county to international level. The cricket XI play annual fixtures against the MCCC and the MCC and have enjoyed much success and county representation over the years and have a large number of boys in County Squads. The athletics team has gone from strength to strength, and in recent years have won the West Midlands Super Schools Championship, providing at the same time a number of county champions. An extensive fixture list is in place, with matches taking place on Saturdays and in mid-week. Tennis is also a thriving area, having achieved recent success at county, divisional and national level, as well as producing individuals who are currently in Great Britain squads.
The increasing strength of girls' games is very apparent. In the last year, there has been success in U.18 and U.12 County Hockey as well impressive netaball performances across the age-groups. Swimming has also been a growth area with last years U.12 girls being crowned borough champions in our first year of trying!
Inter-school fixtures also exist in cross-country running, swimming, basketball, squash, golf, badminton, canoe polo and clay pigeon shooting; and in many of the above activities pupils gain county, divisional and even international honours.
School clubs exist in many sports and are not restricted to the talented few. These include many of the activities previously mentioned, but in particular include: Basketball, Weight training, Canoeing, Swimming, Badminton, Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis and survival swimming. Many of these activities are staffed by the large number of non-PE staff who make the wide-ranging programme of activities possible.
Exciting developments have taken place in recent years and the PE department, which consists of 6 specialist teachers(4 male, 2 female), is keen to consolidate the progress made and to expand into new areas.
