Physical Education

Curriculum: Banner: Physical Education

Physical Education and Games are seen as an integral part of the school programme. All pupils are timetabled to receive PE and Games, up to and including the Sixth Form.

Pupils are expected to strive to attain their best possible personal standards, with a balance being sought between those in school teams aiming for excellence and curriculum work being based on the pursuit of personal improvement and skill development.

At all ages, the school participates in inter-school competition in a range of activities, including Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Athletics, Rounders, Cross Country, Badminton and Swimming. Notable success has been achieved in many activities in recent years.

School clubs exist in many sports and are not restricted to the talented few, with training sessions being open to all. In addition to the above, fencing and sailing are popular activities.

The school has developed a tradition for sports tours and in 2010, Rugby toured South Africa, whilst girls’ Hockey and Netball went to Singapore and Malaysia and the U15 Rugby team to France. In 2011, the Cricket team will again participate in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Tournament in Barbados.

Facilities at the school are excellent with indoor areas comprising a gymnasium, sports hall with multi-gym gallery, indoor heated swimming pool, rifle range and 3 squash courts. Outside, there are 3 Netball courts which have been recently resurfaced (4 hard Tennis courts), a large floodlit astro-turf playing area and a 60 x 12 metre tartan multi-event athletics area. In addition, extensive playing fields accommodate 5 rugby pitches, 2 junior school football pitches, a grass 400m track and 4 permanent cricket squares. These are complemented by 3 artificial and 3 grass nets, as well as 4 artificial playing strips.

The Alan Lee Sports Pavilion opened in 2003 and provides ample changing areas, in addition to A Level teaching rooms and post-match hospitality and meeting areas.

Exciting developments have taken place in recent years and the PE department, which consists of 5 specialist teachers, in addition to many sport- specific coaches, is keen to consolidate the progress made and to expland into new areas.
