History
A level (Edexel)
The intention of this course is to provide a contrast to the predominantly modern history which makes up most GCSEs. It is a mixture of British and European, traditional and modern history, and should provide a varied and stimulating course which offers the opportunity for trips to Berlin, Rome, Moscow and St Petersburg.
At AS level we study Henry VII, and the Unification of Italy. We discover how Henry Tudor defeated ‘evil’ King Richard, established the Tudor Dynasty, and defended it from threats at home and abroad. We explore how Italy become a united country through the ideas of Mazzini, the diplomacy of Cavour, and the suicidal courage of Garibaldi and his ‘thousand’ followers.
At A2 we study Elizabeth - how despite being a ‘mere woman’, she established her authority, dealt with the religious strife which England faced, and negotiated the minefield of 16th century international relations. As an interesting contrast, we also study some modern international relations, with a look at the Cold War - why did it happen, and how close to nuclear extinction did we come?
The emphasis in A level lessons is very much on thinking for yourself. Lessons involve discussing your research, making presentations to the rest of the class, and arguing your point in debates. These skills are highly prized in any number of professions, most notably law, but also business, journalism, the media, the civil service, advertising and many others. History is considered to be an academically rigorous subject and is respected by University admissions tutors and employers alike.
