Physical Education

6th Form (Year 12 and 13)


All 6th form pupils are required to take part in a Games afternoon. Those in school teams take part in Big Side fixtures (Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Cross Country, Cricket, Tennis, Rounders, Athletics), whilst others can opt for a range of activities including Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Aerobics, Golf and Weight Training.


AS/A2 Physical Education


Studying the OCR syllabus, the focus is on the key issues in physical education including balanced, active and healthy lifestyles, performance in practical activity, and the opportunity to pursue specialised areas of interest.


The course is designed for those who:


• Have a keen interest in sport and physical activity
• Want to follow a course that develops the theoretical aspects through practical involvement
• Have an inquiring mind and are interested in sport throughout the world
• Want to know how the body is affected by exercise and how it adapts to training.
• Wish to evaluate and improve their own sporting performance.
• May want to move on to a related career or higher education course.
 

At AS Level the course is assessed through 2 units, which are both compulsory:


G451: An Introduction to Physical Education: This is a theoretical unit examined through a 2 hour written paper and split into 3 sections, where pupils will acquire an appreciation of topic areas including Anatomy and Physiology, Acquiring Movement Skills and Socio-Cultural Studies relating to participation in physical activity.
G 452: Acquiring, Developing and Evaluating Practical Skills: A practical unit, where pupils will be assessed in the performance and analysis of 2 chosen activities.

At A2 Level, the course is also assessed through 2 units:


G453: Principles and Concepts Across Different Areas of Physical Education: A theoretical unit examined through a 2 ½ hour written paper, in which pupils will be assessed in 3 sections: Comparative Studies – looking at physical activity in 3 cultures; Sports Psychology – looking at psychological factors, which influence participation and competence in physical activity; Exercise and Sport Physiology – acquiring an appreciation of how the body changes as a result of physical activity.
G452: The Improvement of Effective Performance and the Critical Evaluation of Practical Activities in Physical Education: A practical unit, where pupils will be assessed in the enhanced performance and analysis of one of their AS activities.

AS and A2 Practical Options

At AS level, two practical options are chosen and one of these is then carried forward to A level. There are a huge range of activities which can be chosen; the only requirement is that they come from 2 activity areas.
Below is a list of the activity areas and some of the activities that may be used for assessment (further options can be found on the OCR website – www.ocr.org.uk)

Athletic: Cross Country, Track and Field, Triathlon
Combat: Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Karate, Wrestling, Tae Kwon-Do
Dance: Ballet, Ballroom Dancing, Education Dance, Irish Dancing, Tap Dance
Gymnastic: Diving, Gymnastics, Trampolining
Invasion Games: Football, Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Water Polo
Net/Wall Games: Badminton, Squash. Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball
Striking/Fielding Games: Cricket, Rounders, Baseball
Target Games: Archery, Golf
Outdoor and Adventurous: Canoeing, Equestrian (4 types), Kayaking, Mountain  Walking, Mountain Biking, Orienteering, Sailing, Skiing, Snowboarding, Surfing
Swimming: Competitive Swimming, Life Saving
Safe and Effective Exercise: Circuit Training
