Solihull School

Spanish Geography Link - Chile

Wessex Project image

The Spanish and Geography Departments at Solihull School work together on a cross-curricular project based on our connection with Chile. The project has three main strands

The Gap programme in Chile.

Two students from Solihull School have the opportunity to go to Chile for eight weeks in the Summer Holidays. They work as assistants at Wessex School and stay with Chilean families

The Gap Programme in Solihull.

Two students from Wessex School come to Solihull School for four months, from February to June. Here, they work as classroom assistants in both language and non- language based tasks. They are hosted by students from Solihull. This gives the opportunity for much practice in spoken Spanish! As part of this link, we also host students from Wessex School four days in May, when they in turn come on tour to Great Britain. There is a full programme of activities which will create opportunities for students from Years 9 - 13 to get know their counterparts and learn something of the other culture. We hope it will stimulate interest in Chile and in Spanish, as well as broadening intellectual and cultural horizons.

The Chile adventure.

Our first group of students will go to Chile in Easter 2008. They will spend time at Wessex School, will be able to stay with Chilean families and will have the opportunity to take part in much travel and adventure throughout the whole of the country.

What to do if you want to know more

If you want to know more about any of these projects, or indeed, if you feel you could offer something to any of our initiatives, we would love to hear from you. There are many ways in which you could get involved: give a talk about an unusual country you have visited, help with visits when the Chilean are with us, and, most importantly, an offer to host a Chilean student for three days when they are with us. If you would like to help, or if you want more information on any of these matters, please contact Julie Brown (Geography): brownj@solsch.org.uk or Merilyn Barrett (Modern Languages): barrettm@solsch.org.uk
