Music
Music plays a large part in the life of the School. There is a full time staff of six musicians together with a large number of visiting instrumental and vocal teachers, working in a purpose-built complex, which is an attractive complex of nine rooms. The rooms are of varying sizes and include a concert room, classroom and teaching and practice rooms.
Many pupils are involved from all sections of the school. There are three orchestras, jazz groups, and various wind, brass and string ensembles. Two major and several informal concerts are held each year.
An excellent choral tradition is maintained by the Chapel Choir, which sings in Chapel at the Evensong or Eucharist services each Sunday, and the Choral Society whose repertoire includes major works such as Haydn's 'Creation', Handel's 'Messiah' and Mozart's 'Requiem'.
All pupils have Music every week as part of their curriculum until the Lower Fifth year. Thereafter, Music may be taken at GCSE and Advanced Level as an option subject.
Private instruction on almost any instrument and in singing can be arranged. Over 250 pupils receive such tuition and every effort is made to arrange lessons so that they do not conflict with the academic programme. There is a long-standing tradition of boys and girls winning Choral and Organ Scholarships to Oxford and Cambridge, and Foundation Awards at the major Music Colleges. In 2006 Sam Baddeley will take up his post as Organ Scholar at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
