Jazz Singers
Many people may think that Monday morning is the worst time to hold a choir practice! These people have been proved wrong! Throughout the year, Jazz Singers has gone from strength to strength as numbers have multiplied.
We kicked off back in early September with some old classics for the St Cecilia Concert – perhaps Mr Perrins was trying to reminisce on his courting days back in the 1940’s … Anyway, the two pieces that we sang were Dream a Little Dream, in which Mr Perrins attempted to make us imagine that we were sitting in a club at the end of the evening after a hard night drinking apple schnapps, hmm! Our other song was the rather more ‘upbeat’ and jolly Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree.
This ‘barbershop’ song contained a few more notes, but we managed it somehow, especially considering we had the astounding voices of Tom Harrower – yes that is ‘voices’ as he seemed to be able to reach the highest notes and even the lowest
It was around this time that we discovered Mr Perrins did not just have a thing for Stravinsky but was also a bit of an S Club 7 fan! For the Commemoration Concert he arranged a version of S Club 7’s Reach for the Stars. This was supposed to contain choreography but the dancing was left to a minimum of jazz hands at the end! This wonderful, but extraordinary arrangement was fantastically performed with solos from Camilla Holder, Daniel Chadwick, Tom Harrower and Annabelle Harris. Our other piece for the Commemoration Concert was the beautiful song from ‘Cats’, Memory.
The Commemoration Concert was not our last star performance – we finished off the year in style with sparkly hats and coloured ties at the Upper Sixth leavers’ assembly. Unfortunately, for this performance we were rather diminished in number due to a Theatre Studies exam which meant that we ended up after all with choreography! Our ranks in this performance included stars such as Miss Pearson and Mrs Hughes who really helped to boost our ranks and give a rousing send-off to the Upper Sixth. Our thanks go out especially to Mr Perrins, Stephen Webster (piano), Tim Page (drums) and TJ Hertz (bass guitar) for accompanying us on all these occasions. I would also like to thank the Upper Sixth members who are leaving this year for their achievement and hard work throughout the year.
