The Wind Quintet

The newly formed wind quintet, consisting of Faye Barrett (flute), Sam Baddeley (clarinet), Matthew Ralph (horn), Alex Hurst (bassoon) and directed by Nicola Bouckley (oboe), has had a successful year, concentrating mainly on music from the Classical period, a time of much chamber music composition. In the St Cecilia Concert in the Christmas term, we gave a very convincing performance of three very contrasting movements of Haydn’s Quintet in D Minor (Op. 42). In the Commemoration Concert, we performed the Divertimento No. 8 in F major by Mozart. This suite contains much variety – a ‘minuet and trio’, an ‘allegro’ and an ‘andante’ – and was played with precision and sensitivity. Not happy to rest on its laurels, the group performed the Mozart and a fun piece, Debussy’s Golliwog’s Cakewalk, in a concert at Temple Balsall Church at the end of the year. We would like to thank Miss Bouckley for her guidance at the Monday lunchtime rehearsals.
