Badminton

This has been yet another year of progress, with more teams, matches and competitions and trips. We have had U18, U16, U14 and U12 A and B teams for each age category, with a mixed team at U18. Next year we look forward to having a girls and mixed team in the Third Form.

Our matches have been against St Peter’s, Langley, Arden School and Small Heath. When adding up all the scores we found that Solihull won 10, lost 8 and drew 1. However, the real strength has been with the U14 and U12 boys who won 41 games and only lost 9. Special mention needs to go to Martin Bullard, Tom Wintle, Mrigank Sinha, Chris Thomas, Stephen Bowland, Ben Crowe and Ed Johnson in the Third Form and to Rob Gooden, Jon Vundum, Andrew Norman, Chris Szarmach, Tom Haley, Tom Shiels, Mike Dyke and Jon Lau in the Fourth Form. The U16 teams have been very well led by Qiao Sun who has captained and coached his teams admirably.

We have entered 3 competitions, the Top Schools Tournament (U16 and U14) and the Junior Doubles Tournament in the Solihull District. Qiao Sun and Rob Gooden won the U14 doubles in the local competition. Congratulations to them.

Half Colours have been awarded to Qiao Sun, Rob Gooden, Jon Vundum, Andrew Norman, Chris Szarmach and Tom Haley.

Another highlight was our trip to the NIA for the ‘Ultimate Badminton Experience’. We took 20 students there for 2 hours of coaching followed by a chance to see the National Badminton Championships.
