Solihull School

Introduction

Hockey

2004/2005 hockey been a year of contrasts. The Girls’ 1st XI has been immensely successful, as have the tennis, athletics and rounders teams. Our netball teams, on the other hand, just seemed to struggle and Vicki Finch was disappointed not to inherit any new cross-country runners to enable us to take part in the leagues this year. Our high points were really high but the low ones were perhaps a little difficult to come to terms with.

At Solihull we do believe it is the participation and enjoyment that really matter: any successes we have are ‘the icing on the cake’.

On the back of a fantastic hockey tour to South Africa last summer Katie Morton couldn’t wait to get her hockey team onto the pitch in September.

The fifteen girls who spent three weeks away were not going to relinquish their places in the 1st XI easily to new talents arriving in the Lower Sixth. It proved very difficult for them to really integrate into what had already proved a very competent side. Congratulations to Vicki Priest, Caroline Moss and Anna Mulira for making that journey successfully.

Amy Preston was keen to lead the netball teams, Sarah Trueman and Fiona Hurt competently enthused the tennis and rounders teams respectively. Indeed the core of girls that we have said ‘goodbye’ this summer must rank as the most abundantly talented and enthusiastic group of sportswomen we have been fortunate enough to have had go through the school. I cannot name them all individually but they all probably get a mention in the following reports.

I thank every single one of them for making my last year at Solihull a very happy and enjoyable one. Thanks to Chris Mayer for his fantastic coaching input with hockey, to Miss Pearson for her assistance throughout the season and to Denise Ross for her help with the netball teams.

Finally I wish Miss Hogg (the new Head of Girls’ PE & Games) every success as we move into a new era for girls’ sport here at Solihull School.
