Solihull School

Modern Foreign Languages

Solihull is home to three thriving, dynamic and forward-looking language departments. We offer our pupils the chance to study different combinations of French, Spanish and German, with Spanish being the compulsory language in the Third Form and the Preparatory School. All Solihull pupils will study at least Modern Foreign Language up to GCSE, with many studying two languages in the Middle School. In addition, we are fortunate to be able to offer our Sixth Form students A Level courses in all three languages, with the results in these subjects being consistently high and with many students continuing their study of Modern Foreign Languages at some of the best universities in the UK. In addition to our A Level provision, we also offer our Sixth Form students the opportunity to follow a course in Business Spanish, French and German, leading to a qualification recognised by the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

At Solihull, we aim to inspire our pupils to become open-minded, outward-looking young people who can use their languages to connect with people from other language communities, and an integral part of our work is the development of an awareness of and respect for other cultures. To this end, we have developed a broad and exciting programme of trips and visits in Spain, France and Germany, and we are fortunate to benefit from long-standing school partnerships with schools in Corrientes (Argentina), Orihuela (Spain), Bourg-en-Bresse (France) and Hofheim (Germany). At Solihull, we use our languages to contribute to the achievement of the School’s stated aims of fostering ambition, making the most of opportunities and contributing to a sense of global community.
