The Big Debate 19 June 2014

‘This house believes that rich nations (G20) should strive to meet the UN guideline of giving 0.7% of their GDP to the poorest’.

On Thursday 19 June a very special event took place - the Solihull Inaugural Big Debate, hosted by former pupil and Radio 4 Presenter of the Moral Maze, Michael Buerk. The motion was proposed by the Right Honourable Caroline Spelman MP, with Adam Hawksbee, President of Sheffield University's Debating Society, opposing the motion.

As one of the largest student debating societies in the country, we are very pleased to have welcomed Mr Buerk as the new Patron of our Debating Society.

The format was ‘Mace’ style, and Mr Buerk chaired the Debate, as well as oversaw questions from the floor.

All former pupils, staff and parents, along with current pupils and parents were invited.

Remembrance Day Commemorations 10 and 11 November 2014

Every year Solihull commemorates Remembrance Day. This year, to mark the centenary of the First World War, we invited former CCF staff and Old Silhillians who are serving with, or retired from the Armed Forces to join us.

On Monday 10 November, School Archivist John Loynton gave an informative talk on Solihull School's role in the Great War, followed by a wonderful dinner in the Refectory. The Remembrance Service the following day was a moving and memorable occasion, made all the more special by the presence of so many service men and women.

London Dinner 9 May 2014

On Friday 9 May 50 former pupils, staff and former staff attended the Annual London Dinner at the beautiful Pewterers' Hall. A great night was had by all, as memories were shared over drinks and a wonderful three course dinner. Speeches were made by the Headmaster, David Lloyd; President of the Old Silhilians Association, Julia Skan; and London Representative, Phil Pinto. Our thanks go to former pupil and Master of The Worshipful Company of Pewterers, Mr Michael Johnson, for facilitating the use of the venue and for the excellent hospitality received on the night. Photographs of the event can be found here.

Reunion Day 2014 - 22 March 2014

On Saturday 22 March 2014, the School opened its doors to all alumni, former parents and teaching staff and we loved seeing everyone there! No matter when you left, or how long the passage of time since your last visit, it was an event to remember and cherish!

The day's events began with registration and tours at 11am, followed by lunch in the Refectory at 12 noon. After lunch a whole host of activities took place, including the annual alumni versus current pupils sports matches in rugby, netball and hockey, with winners' presentations by former pupil and England Rugby Coach, Mr Martin Green. Workshops from the Science, Psychology, Maths, Philosophy and Art Departments, an opportunity to visit a dress rehearsal of this year's School musical "Spamalot" and tours of the School brought back many fond memories. See here for the full programme.

In the evening, we retired to the Old Silhillians' Clubhouse for a buffet dinner, drinks and dancing, although the dancing was optional!
