Solihull School

  • A new school year, time to "seize opportunities as yet unimagined"

Solihull School Poet Laureate Raksha (UVI) encourages everyone in the school community to seek out new experiences and adventures in this poem, written especially to mark the start of the new school year.

No sailor is born knowing the tides.
No navigator begins with a perfect map.
    Every journey bears a question:
not “Where will this take me?”
but “What might I discover along the way?”

    This is the beauty of a beginning;
that it asks nothing of us
    except that we begin.

    Our beginning opens before us
like a jeweller’s case at first light,
each gem catching the sun differently,
    each revealing its own colour,
    its own fire,
    its own way of shining.

    So, it is with us.
Each of us arrives with something valuable:
    a talent to share,
    a curiosity to explore,
    a kindness to offer,
    and a determination to grow.

Our year ahead waits to unfold,
    holding lessons not yet learned,
    moments not yet lived,
    and opportunities not yet imagined.
Each lesson, each challenge, each act of kindness
will help shape the community we create.

For the value of a year
is found not only in where it leads us,
but in how fully we choose to live it.

    Perseverantia.
